Do you remember your first gaming mouse?
I remember the first time I got excited about a mouse like it was yesterday. It was early 2000’s, I was a freshman in high school, I had just built my first PC, and I went to Texas for a convention called the CPL (Cyberathlete Professional League). I was just there to spectate, meet some friends I made on Halo, and essentially be a teenager who was lucky enough to have a vacation centered around being a nerd.
The whole convention was amazing as a kid. It was like my early version of going to CES, and between all the different booths showing off their latest gaming products the one I kept going back to was Razer. Now, back then Razer wasn’t what it is today. At CES now they’re front and center on the CES floor with a giant crowd and dozens of products. This was different, it was smaller, there were less than 5 people working at it, and and right at the front of the booth was the Razer Diamondback, glowing in select colors in all it’s glory. I needed it.
I made a plan in my head that on the last day of the convention I was going to ask them if I could buy one of the models they had on display for a discounted price, because the ~50$ pricetag was way too high for me. The final day comes, I walk up to the booth, muster up the courage to ask for a discounted floor model, and the guy kinda just shrugged and offered it to me for like 5$ off. Defeated, I left the convention and went back home, where I took my time to saved up enough money and buy one new. It was everything I could have hoped for, and funnily enough, I believe it was actually the only Razer mouse I’ve ever owned.
But let’s fast forward to more modern day. I started playing Overwatch and just got a Logitech G303 from a friend. I’ve always been competitive when it comes to pretty much anything, but Overwatch was probably the first game where I felt like “oh, I’m pretty good at this”. I went through multiple G303’s throughout my time playing Overwatch and through most of my 500+ hours in PUBG and I thought I’d never use another mouse ever again. Unfortunately I had no choice but to extend my search because G303 got discontinued and my time with a G303 was now finite.
Luckily at this point, I had started working for Marques and although the channel isn’t really known for gaming, we had the occasional gaming peripheral that would roll into the office that I would gladly try out. Steelseries, Logitech, Zowie, all came through and I loved trying them, but the first mouse to really blow my mind was the Glorious Model O. I was maybe a little too stubborn back then and really didn’t believe that wireless gaming mice were able to have good enough latency to keep up with a wired mouse, so the paracord cable with the Glorious Model O really made me want to try it.
And it was so worth it. That thing ripped. It looked cool, matte white, RGB, kinda weird logo, super light. It was a thing of beauty. It was my next mainstay in my setup and it served me really well. I used it all the way up until the launch of Valorant, a game that I didn’t realize would suck me in as much as it did, and a game that was very different from anything I’ve ever played before.
This was my first tactical shooter, a type of game that is insanely precise in all of your mechanics, and it was my first game where I realized that the high sensitivity I used in Overwatch and PUBG wasn’t going to help me consistently in Valorant. I slowly tuned my sensitivity lower and lower and lower, until I was getting more and more comfortable. I honestly think I over tuned my settings (I currently use 800dpi .2 in game sens) and it got to the point where to make any large turns I was pulling the cord of my mouse so much that it would pull and tangle itself on my mousepad. I tried a mouse bungie, I swapped my setup around, I got a HUGE mousepad, but the problem still existed. I had to make the move to wireless. Luckily wireless seemed to be far more popular, I was seeing professionals and big name streamers compete with wireless mice, and while there were plenty of choices, one seemed like the obvious front runner. The Logitech G Pro Wireless
Funny enough, I actually found a tweet from the day I ordered it 🤣
Using wireless for the first time felt like I was leveling up. It felt so light and free, everything was smoother. No more snagging my mouse or launching my mouse bungie across my desk because someone was shooting me from behind. I couldn’t believe it took me this long to make the switch. I can never go back.
Since I’ve played Valorant I’ve been switching between 3 main mice that actually are all very different. The Logitech G Pro Wireless, the Steelseries Prime Wireless, and Glorious released their Model O Wireless. I like them all for totally different reasons, and for a while I was actually rotating all 3 of them like every 2 weeks. It was probably partially because I was blaming the mouse for my lack of skill, but I also just genuinely enjoyed all 3 mice.
But in the end, my current daily driver is the Glorious Model O wireless. It seems to fit my grip the best out of the 3 and just feels the most comfortable. It also at the time of release, was easily the cheapest option at around 80$ when the G Pro was coming in around 120$. I don’t there is an easier mouse to recommend to anyone and I’ve bought it for people as a gift multiple times and they always love it.
I’m super excited for the Model O 2 which I should be getting in also, we have a G Pro Superlight that I’ve messed around with a bit, and I believe Xtrfy is sending over some mice that I’m really excited to try out. I plan on doing some small reviews on all of them here eventually, so this is just more of a quick piece to show some of my experiences going forward!
And just in case people want to judge my experiences based on the rank I was in my games I’ll just add some context here at the end to show I was at least ok at them!
Overwatch 1 - 3400
PUBG - Cracked top 100 in kill rating
Valorant - Peaked at Ascendant 1
Loved this!
I am gonna start a gaming set up some time in the near future, so I imagine I'll get my turn of deep dive into gaming mice and keyboards. Seems super interesting.
